In a landmark meeting aimed at enhancing energy cooperation, representatives of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) engaged in high-level discussions today (30) with a Sri Lankan delegation led by Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. The talks signified a pivotal step towards energy security, investment growth, and regional collaboration between the two nations.
A Bold Step Toward Strengthening Bilateral Energy Partnerships
The Sri Lankan delegation, which included Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha Fernando, explored critical energy-related subjects with ADNOC executives. The discussions primarily revolved around identifying supply and investment prospects within Sri Lanka’s petroleum industry, laying the foundation for joint projects that could drive mutual benefits for both economies.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the exploration of a long-term crude oil supply agreement, ensuring Sri Lanka receives petroleum at a competitive and reasonable price. This move is expected to stabilize the country’s oil procurement strategy, shielding Sri Lanka from price volatility and ensuring uninterrupted access to high-quality crude oil from one of the world’s leading energy suppliers.
Enhancing Sri Lanka’s Refining Capacity & Expanding Regional Market Presence
Sri Lanka’s existing refining infrastructure, while functional, requires modernization to improve output efficiency and meet growing domestic and regional demand. ADNOC representatives expressed strong interest in supporting Sri Lanka’s efforts to enhance oil refining capacity, paving the way for advanced refining technologies that could significantly increase production volume and fuel quality.
Additionally, discussions ventured into strategies for strengthening Sri Lanka’s position within the regional petroleum market. With an optimized refining process and strategic investments, Sri Lanka aims to become a key player in South Asia’s energy distribution landscape, promoting economic stability and energy independence.
High-Level Representation & Diplomatic Engagement
The meeting was further reinforced by the presence of H.E. Khaled Nasser Al Ameri, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Sri Lanka, alongside Abdulla Al Qubaisi, Senior Vice President – Crude and Condensate at ADNOC, and other senior executives from ADNOC. Their participation underscored the commitment of the UAE to fostering robust energy collaborations with Sri Lanka.
With Sri Lanka’s energy sector positioned for significant transformation, this high-level engagement marks the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership that will drive energy security, investment growth, and industrial advancements.
Looking Ahead: Next Steps for Energy Cooperation
As Sri Lanka moves towards a more resilient energy strategy, the outcomes of today’s discussions could redefine the nation’s petroleum industry in the coming years. The potential agreements, once finalized, will deliver long-term stability in crude oil supply, improve refining capabilities, and unlock new investment opportunities—strengthening economic ties between Sri Lanka and the UAE.
Sri Lanka’s leadership remains optimistic about establishing a formal energy pact with ADNOC soon, setting new benchmarks for petroleum industry growth and energy sustainability.
Discussions also covered the possibility of swiftly forming a long-term agreement to supply crude oil to Sri Lanka at a reasonable price, improving the country’s oil refining capacity and strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in the regional petroleum market.
Also in attendance were H.E. Khaled Nasser Al Ameri, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Sri Lanka, along with Abdulla Al Qubaisi, Senior Vice President – Crude and Condensate at ADNOC, and other senior executives from the company.
