The word Aditya, taken as a singular entity, refers to the quietly powerful and yet serene Sun god. Taken as a composite, there are twelve Adityas, major solar deities, who are the offspring of the goddess Aditi. In the Rig Veda, the Aditya have been described as bright and pure, blameless and perfect. The Aditya are beneficent gods who act as protectors of all beings and who guard the world from harm.
